This week, we look at Ofwat’s response to the Competition & Markets Authority’s (CMA) provisional findings on four water company PR19 appeals. Ofwat has claimed that elements of the approach by water companies responding to the provisional findings are “very surprising” and has asked the CMA to consider the requests carefully. Ofwat also announced innovation foundation Nesta, supported by Arup and Isle Utilities, as its partner for its £200mn water innovation competitions. Water industry bodies followed up a commitment in July regarding water company contribution to greening of the economy after the COVID-19 crisis with details of a regulatory assessment process for this issue. The government published the National Infrastructure Strategy this week, setting out plans to transform UK infrastructure and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. It includes plans for the water industry regarding drought management. Severn Trent, Pennon Group and United Utilities each published their half-year results, outlining successes in what has been a challenging period. Large parts of the UK water and wastewater supplier community have seen a fall in business turnover during the COVID-19 crisis, according to findings of a British Water impact survey.
