Our online energy markets training service – learning and development is as important in these strange times as ever

Despite all the change to working patterns over the last few months it is still the case that the energy sector continues to evolve and change to tackle the immediate challenges presented by COVID-19 and the equally pressing need to meet net zero targets by 2050.

Having worked at Cornwall Insight for over 12 years now it has been remarkable to observe how the sector has changed in this relatively short period of time and how we as a company have grown and continually adapted to meet our client’s needs. Since heading up our training service last year the greatest change I have recently witnessed is to move our learning and development service rapidly to online only delivery as the UK went into ‘lockdown’.

We have quickly adapted our full-length scheduled courses to be delivered as three two-hour sessions on consecutive days as not even the most willing delegate can keep engagement levels up in front of a screen all day! Additionally, the change in working patterns, which are likely to persist for many more months and lead to a sea change in office-based practices in the long-term, has spurred us to bring forward new offerings to help customers meet their learning and development requirements.

In these tough times we know it is difficult to assess exact training requirements as we all adjust to the new economic and market conditions, but nonetheless the market and the policies and regulatory framework which underpin it continues to evolve. A (virtual) glance over at our consultancy team confirms that there is no letup in those looking to invest in new assets or ventures to capitalise on the opportunities that are, or will shortly, emerge from electric vehicle charging infrastructure and electricity retail, low-carbon heat including the potential for hydrogen, and the rapidly changing landscape for ‘flexibility’.

The work we do across the business, be it project based, revenue and cost forecasts, or market intelligence subscription services, ensures that we stay at the top of our game when it comes to creating new, or updating existing, learning and development products. Our comprehensive suite of full-length courses are designed for Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced knowledge levels meaning we can provide training for those new to the sector and requiring sector orientation, all the way through to detailed sessions on topics such as green project finance, electricity market settlement processes, and wholesale market risk management.

Our Market Insight webinar services provides shorter session updates and our independent insights on industry ‘hot topics’. Upcoming sessions will cover hydrogen and grid forming technologies (being led by the inimitable Tom Edwards) and recent sessions have covered subjects as diverse as Carbon Capture Usage and Storage, Ofgem’s network charging reform programme, and the intricacies of CVA and SVA metering arrangements.

Our new learning and development subscription service offers an efficient and effective means to access our scheduled public courses. This not only provides great cost savings when compared to booking separate places at our scheduled courses, it also centralises the process and allows for a hassle free way to attend any of our full-length online courses and greatly assists with budget certainty when training requirements are unclear.
