A letter to the Business Secretary from the CCC has highlighted a gap in policy measures for road transport to achieve the most cost-effective path for decreasing transport emissions.
The UK transport sector is now the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter by sector, responsible for 28% of national emissions. Current policy measures are insufficient to meet the most cost-effective path for GHG abatement. So, the CCC has urged the government to implement policies of greater ambition. The letter, which responds to the CCC’s response to the government’s Road to Zero Strategy, shows that there is a policy gap of 14mn tonnes of CO2 equivalent (MtCO2e). Also shown in our chart 42MtCO2e is also at risk due to a lack of firm policies and measures.
