Smart charging: The future of EV charging

In our latest podcast, Tom Lusher, Tom Edwards and Jacob Briggs discuss recent developments in the electric vehicle (EV) smart charging space. They unpack two significant consultations from the government. The first lays out future proposals of smart charging; meanwhile, the second seeks views on installing charge points in buildings. Additionally, our experts comment on the opportunities and challenges that face the electricity market as EVs and smart charging become increasingly integral to the energy system.

The government took powers under the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act (AEVA) 2018. As a result, through secondary legislation, this enabled the government to act and manage the impact of EVs on the electricity system. The EV Smart Charging consultation outlines the approach to allowing smart charging. This is defined as shifting the time of day when an EVs charges, or modulating the rate of charge at different times, in response to signals such as electricity tariffs. This podcast explores proposals to maximise the use of smart charging technologies, provide grid and consumer protection, and encourage uptake.

The EV Charging in Residential and Non-residential Buildings consultation follows on from the Road to Zero. The government announced that every new home should have a charge point, helping future proof homes for the EV transition. This consultation seeks views on introducing this requirement into the English Building Regs.

In addition to discussing the two significant consultations, our experts provide commentary on the potential outcomes of the two developments.
