Following the successful go-live of the first phase of SDP-02 Energy Storage Power Stations, now is the perfect time to assess the situation. We’ll explore the collective impact of implemented, ongoing, and planned changes, and what they mean for the future of battery storage assets.
The Single Electricity Market (SEM) has a goal to be net zero by 2050 across Ireland and Northern Ireland, with an interim target of 80% renewable electricity by 2030 in just five years’ time. Rising demand from electrification of heat and transport, the expansion of data centres, and the closure of dispatchable fossil-fuelled plants will make balancing the system increasingly complex.
This creates both challenges and opportunities. Flexible technologies such as storage help balance the system, but market reforms are needed to unlock the scale of investment required to meet our 2030 targets.
