The keenly awaited latest Government update on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) programme has been published. The most hotly debated topic under REMA was whether to introduce a zonally priced wholesale market or look to retain a nationally priced wholesale market with other reforms to optimise system efficiency, and locational signals for siting of new generation, demand, and storage assets in recognition of the fact that the status quo cannot be maintained. The Government has now announced that zonal pricing will not be pursued and that a Reformed National Pricing (RNP) package will be implemented, with the aim to reduce constraint management and balancing costs being faced by consumers.
