Cornwall Insight partnered with international law firm Gowling WLG to host a joint half-day seminar on 13 November 2018 to inform the developing debate on electric vehicle (EV) and electricity market synergies. Over 50 attendees heard from a diverse range of experts on how transport electrification at scale can be accommodated. The automotive sector has committed significant investment to develop EVs, with government low-carbon policies increasingly supporting the transition away from conventional fossil fuel powered vehicles. The GB electricity sector is also undergoing a once in a generation change as market rules and the physical system evolves to accommodate ‘smarter’ technologies and outcomes.
Both of these transitions have the potential to deliver large carbon emission reductions, lower end user costs, and new opportunities for investment in novel business models as the sectors increasingly coalesce.
This event brought together experts in their respective fields to elaborate on real-world experience and examples where electricity retailers, distribution network operators and advisors are offering consumers EV related electricity tariffs and products or trialling innovative projects to assess how best to accommodate the expected rise in electrification of transport.
Solutions to the immediate challenge of accommodating EVs at scale in the local networks are becoming clearer, but the need for a wide range of actors to collaborate even further in order to unlock the full potential for EVs is increasingly apparent.
